Description

Thank you everyone for the kind comments! I'm glad this has been such a popular image, it was certainly the hardest to achieve. I will definitely be attempting to capture more photos of this phenomenon now. Although there are no promises that I'll get anything as great as this!

Macro photo. NO manipulation, although I am guilty of cropping the image.

This is a macro image of water being blasted by high bass music.
Bass vibrates the water so fast that once a droplet separates from the main body of water, it can't get back in so you get little balls of water rolling across the surface.

And that's what you're seeing here, a tiny ball of water, rolling along the surface of a larger body of water.

I notice some people doubt this photo hasn't been manipulated, I don't blame them really.
One reason I noticed brought up a few times is why the water orb is red and the main body of water isn't.
I can't really explain this, I have a few theories though...
One possibility, the main mass of water is too deep to take in the sunlight and shine that same bright red as the orb.
Another possibility, the sun glare just drowns out any hints of red. As you can see, there is alot of glare on the surface.

Either way, I hope you guys enjoy this photo. I put alot of hours into trying to capture it. :)

I'm usually very generous in my critiques, but I've never given a 5 star - and this is definitely worth breaking the rule!

The amount of knowledge and experimentation it took to take this photo is pretty astounding. You must truly be an artist that is compelled to find these moments of extraordinary.

I think despite the controversy surrounding this photo and whether or not it was manipulated, you did an important thing in being democratic and not disabling comments, or responding negatively. This is a skill that many artists on dA don't possess yet, or are too thin-skinned to address constructively. It's important for young artists to see examples such as yours. (Obviously, I'm feeling righteous today, haha!)

And onto the photo itself. The sharpness of the bead of water is in great contrast to the soft rippled surfaced is sits on. I also think the lighting in the upper background ties well with the bead, bringing some warmth to the water. Without this warm light, I think the photo would have been too cold and would look a lot of its movement. This warm light is also very similar to early evening sunset, giving the impression that the bead represents some kind of journey - Although I don't think this was intentional, it certainly speaks to the time spent attempting to get the photo.

One thing I wish could have happened, is a little more sharpness in the foreground to really give the photo depth. Since there's no horizon line, this is important to determine through pattern perspective, blur, hue gradient and so on. That little peek of blinds in the reflection bottom right (I assume they're blinds, lol, but I might be wrong) is splendid. I think using those reflections would have created the perfect amount of sharpness if utilized.

Again, beautiful work! I appreciate that you were able to get such a magnificent shot without processing - so many photographers rely on LR, PS, etc to perfect their shots that I think often they try to learn the programs before they learn the skill. Your photo is a perfect example of how skill is clearly the pedestal on which the technology sits.
